Student project: Miniaturized mm-scale RF transceiver system for implantable applications

We have achieved good success on wireless solutions for biomedical applications, e. g. the world-first millimeter-scale Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) radio for implantable smart pills, presented at ISSCC 2020*. To continue our success, we will develop an extremely small-volume transceiver and its key components to be compatible with popular standards, e. g. Bluetooth. In such design, many external components may need to be removed or integrated on-chip, e.g., battery, crystal, PMU, or even antenna.

What you will do

External components are indispensable components in wireless communication but limits the size and cost reduction of the overall wireless module. Many applications, e.g., capsule endoscopy, need a complete integration for small-size and cost-efficiency RF transceiver, which cannot afford to employ bulky external components. To realize a miniaturized and low-cost transceiver, the crystal-less transceiver design will be investigated in this project.  

  • Literature studies on state-of-the-art wireless transceiver.
  • Understanding both analog and digital/system design methodologies.
  • Architecture study and proposal.
  • Circuit implementation.
  • Layout and post-layout simulation.

What we do for you

As the world-best research institute, we have completed the unprecedented researches in Ultra Low-Power (ULP) RF transceiver field and presented in top-level conferences and journals. With the student project, you will gain the top-quality level of integrated circuit design experience.    

Who you are

  • You are a Msc/Bsc student.
  • You are available for a period of 12 months.
  • Good analytical skills (e. g. Mathematical skills).
  • Good CAD skills (e. g. MATLAB/Simulink/Spectre/ADS).
  • Knowledges of designing CMOS circuits.
  • Knowledges of RF systems.
  • Entitled to do an internship in the Netherlands.
  • Motivated student eager to work independently and expand knowledge in the field. 
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
