Frans Schmetz
Campus 2.0

I am in my office at the moment, ruminating, while looking out over the water outside The Strip. The Internet has been around for 40 years this year. The first connection was established between two computer networks in 1969 – between the network of the University of California in Los Angeles and that of Stanford University in Palo Alto. This made the so called ARPANET the official predecessor of our current Internet.
So much has changed since that time: the accessibility of information, the way in which we communicate. We seem to be taking on increasingly larger amounts of work and living at an ever faster pace. Yet the edge seems to have been slightly taken off our unbridled hunger for information. In order to avoid collapsing under an information overload, we need to come up with new strategies. These days the web is developing more and more into a social environment - a world in which people find each another easily, start networks and groups, share information and communicate on matters that occupy them, directly and very fast. With all its possibilities, the Internet is an unparalleled open innovation tool. And that is why I am very pleased that we as a Campus are going to use those possibilities to the full. High Tech Campus Eindhoven is going web 2.0!
Behind the scenes people are shaping our new online environment. Starting point is open innovation. That starts with finding each other easily. Who works where on what at the Campus? A Campus wide phone book is one of the new features. Soon you will be able to surf our own online environment here in the community on the basis of your profile – keep each other informed, inspire, motivate, surprise, help, meet one another. This virtual Campus is up to you to use. If it explodes in the same way as the Internet did, it may well become a very powerful instrument supporting our wonderful ecosystem to the full. I am curious. What about you?

Campus joint initiator of the budding
business talent competition

Amsterdam Antwerp Challenge is the name of the competition that aims to find budding innovative entrepreneurs. Anyone who is interested and living in the area roughly between Amsterdam and Antwerp may submit a business plan. There are four participation streams: Consumer Lifestyle, Media & Communication, Healthcare and Clean Tech & Energy. The Challenge takes the contestants through a few rounds. Every round offers you the opportunity to make money. But even more important: it will give participants access to highly valuable contacts (e.g. with investors), ideas and coaching – which they can then use to turn their ground-breaking plan into worldwide business. Several captains of industry will provide feedback and assess the entries. Besides High Tech Campus Eindhoven, Philips and MediaGuild are initiators of the Amsterdam Antwerp Challenge. The competition is still open to new contestants. The deadline for entries to the first round closes on 29 September.

Cedova services integrated in MiPlaza
Cedova services integrated in MiPlaza

MiPlaza has expanded its expertise. Since June, the services of Campus resident Cedova B.V. have been incorporated in MiPlaza. The seven Cedova staff members now make up the new MiPlaza ‘Photonics Laboratory’. The department supplies III-V compound semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. John Reid, former CEO of Cedova B.V., has been appointed Business Manager for this new activity. John Reid:
“The merger with MiPlaza has been a positive move for us. Before, Cedova was predominantly a cleanroom within a cleanroom. We were already using the MiPlaza cleanrooms to produce the products we supply – III-V Compound chips for optoelectronic devices such as lasers, photo detectors et cetera. So, basically, joining forces was a logical step. MiPlaza also has much more to offer to our clients. This has become clear from the positive reactions we have received from them.”

Civolution takes over Thomson STS Watermarking

Campus resident Civolution, leading producers of technology and services to protect digital and other audio and video content, has taken over Thomson’s Software & Technology Solutions watermarking business. Thomson is now a shareholder of the organisation. Integrating the activities of STS will enable Civolution to market a broader and fuller portfolio of products dealing with content identification and tracking. The combination of these two providers has resulted in a unique and strong service solution provider that helps media content producers and distributors to prevent illegal copying and distribution of audio and video files. This is a fast-growing market. In addition to its current services, Civolution wants to develop new leading-edge products with the former Thomson STS team. Civolution is a Philips spin-off and featured in an earlier edition of
E-magine with its ground-breaking product CineFence.

Holst Centre scores above average in
European research programmes

European experts have approved half of the project proposals submitted by Holst Centre. Compared to the average approval percentage of around ten percent this is an exceptional score. The Seventh Framework Programme and several other initiatives are allocating European research funds for socially relevant themes to ensure that Europe can take the lead in global research. Independent experts assess the submissions and allocate the funds on the basis of an order of precedence. They approved 50 percent of the approximately twenty submissions in which Holst Centre was involved. Several ended up in the Top 3 or even at the very top of their category. Paul Blom, Director of Science at Holst Centre: “This is confirmation for us at Holst Centre that we have succeeded, together with our partners, in developing crucial knowledge regarding flexible electronics and wireless sensors within a short period of time. It also shows that our technology links up with themes that are relevant to the common good.”

High Tech Campus Eindhoven participates in
Dutch Design Week

Last year the Dutch Design Week drew 80,000 visitors from home and abroad. With over 180 exhibitions, lectures and workshops it is one of the prime design events in the world. From 17 to 25 October all design-loving eyes will once again be focused on Eindhoven. The 2009 edition of the DDW will focus on Design & Technology. This was an excellent reason for High Tech Campus Eindhoven to decide to participate in the event. During the DDW the Campus will be the location for various activities including the photo exhibition ‘Boffins, Creativity and Innovation in action’, a High Tech Playground for children and a Design & Technology Tour. The activities will be crowned with a large-scale ‘Unconference’ on the Campus site: High Tech Camping. The October special of
E-magine will feature more details of the activities on the Campus during the Dutch Design Week. Take a look at the DDW site for a preview.

High Tech Camping experimental creative event
High Tech Camping experimental creative event

High Tech Camping promises to become a special event. First of all, High Tech Camping will be held at peculiar hours: Friday 23 October from 15.00 to 00.00 hours and Saturday 24 October from 10.00 to 18.00 hours. The set-up is loosely based on the BarCamp format, an event that has only participants, no audience. Everybody contributes – by means of a presentation, in a discussion or in some creative way. There is no hard and fast programme; apart from a few lectures and workshops, the event primarily offers space to exchange passions, knowledge and experiences in small groups based on the Design & Technology theme. The atmosphere will be informal and open. The event is intended for artists, designers, engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs working on and near the Campus. Participants may stay the night in Yurts on the Campus. Participation is free and everybody is welcome, but registration is advisable.
We also invite everybody to contribute, either as part of the organisation or by means of a performance or a short presentation that ties in with the Design & Technology theme.
The Campus has free WiFi. You can register here.

Technific integrates with Brainport programme

Campus resident Technific is involved in the promotion of technology and technical education among young people. Its purpose is to guarantee sufficient influx of science workers in the future. To achieve its goals, the Science Education and Promotion Association [Stichting Techniek Educatie and Promotie], to which Technific belongs – alongside BrainTrigger – has decided to join forces with Brainport Development. Science promotion at Brainport is primarily done through the TOA / Working in Brainport umbrella programme, in which TOA stands for Technologie-Onderwijs-Arbeidsmarkt [Technology-Education-Labour Market]. One joint controlling body has been set up to ensure that all activities are coordinated effectively and enhance one another: the Verbindingscentrum Techniek [Technology Coordination Centre]. Technific will be part of this control platform. Verbindingscentrum Techniek will be operating on the basis of a jointly formulated plan. The aim is to promote science and technology in the entire educational chain to ensure that the Eindhoven region – with its technological profile – can count on sufficient influx of well-educated science workers in the long run.

Research into Business

‘Being a member of ARTEMISIA is a boost to intellectual
strength and innovative power’

“ARTEMISIA is an association with an appealing international message for organisations active in embedded systems”. This is how Permanent Secretary Jan Lohstroh introduced the organisation, which now has 160 members all over Europe. Multinationals such as Philips, NXP, Siemens and Nokia are associates, as well as universities and small and medium-sized businesses. ARTEMISIA organises the European Technology Platform (ETP) for embedded systems (ARTEMIS-ETP). Just like the other 35 ETPs that operate in promising scientific fields, the ARTEMIS-ETP has published a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) outlining a course for all R&D in Europe, both subsidised and unsubsidised. One of ARTEMISIA’s important tasks is to represent the business world and research institutes in the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking (ARTEMIS-JU). This is the new European funding institute for embedded systems which is co-funded by the associated Member States and the European Commission. The ARTEMIS-JU research agenda is related to the SRA of the ARTEMIS-ETP.
“The agenda for embedded systems boosts European collaboration between businesses and knowledge institutes,” says Lohstroh. “The technology is so complex than businesses are no longer capable of developing the products for the future on their own. We create a platform where parties with shared ambitions can find each other, an ‘open innovation ecosystem’ in which players from the business world identify research and development themes for major R&D projects that they want to tackle in collaboration. What’s particularly attractive about the ARTEMIS-JU programme is its fast subsidy model. As the EU member states have reserved money in advance, the time between the submission of a proposal and the start of a project is short. Basically the subsidy funds are already available for projects that meet the preset evaluation criteria according to independent experts.” Lohstroh concluded with a heartfelt appeal to small and medium-sized businesses: “We want to get as many innovative entrepreneurs from this sector on board as possible. They are welcome at our brokerage events and our website has a partner search tool that is used intensively. It has already led to the creation of great consortiums. There are opportunities galore. Who knows... there may be an interesting collaboration on the horizon with an R&D partner in Latvia or Hungary. Being a member of ARTEMISIA is a boost to intellectual strength and innovative power.”

Holst Centre adds unique lamination unit to roll-to-roll R&D line

The recent installation of a lamination tool brings Holst Centre one step closer to demonstrating a complete systems-in-foil manufacturing process on its roll-to-roll R&D line. This unique piece of equipment will allow Holst Centre to test and develop innovative methods for accurately laminating multiple interconnected functional foils for large area electronics. First lamination trials using 30 cm wide foils are planned for the start of next year. Together with its partners in the Integration and Interconnects technology program, Holst Centre will use the new machine to investigate further optimization and application of this process for large-area electronics, such as OLED lighting and organic photovoltaics (OPV).

Campus Summer Sports Tournaments: Competition bonds!

An impression: Thursday 11 June, 18.00 hours. The weather was anything but perfect. The rain was lashing the asphalt. Time for a good game of 3-against-3 basketball. Two teams had withdrawn on account of the weather forecast. Six teams remained. That left enough matches though – everyone had five matches to play. The teams were well-matched. The competition was great, the players played at high speed. Some people even got injured. One player had to be taken to hospital to be stitched up. Fortunately, he recovered quickly. Just when we were about to start the final, the clouds burst again. Just for a short time, but the rain was torrential. The court was so wet that we were unable to continue with the competition. Eventually, points decided the winner. This year’s trophy went to ‘Awesomeness’ with Gianluca Monaci, Andrei Patru, Julien Ribot, and Linfeng Li. Runners up were the Italians of ‘We Love This Veronica.it’.

For the past few consecutive summers High Tech Campus Eindhoven has organised special summer night sports tournaments for all Campus residents. And it has been a success. The evenings are always great fun and well attended. This year there were basketball, volleyball, football and tennis competitions. We would like to thank all the players and teams for their enthusiasm; see you at Summer Sports 2010!

First HTC NoP event very successful

Following the Atos Origin Communication and Change Network of Professionals (NoP), we are now setting up the High Tech Campus NoP. Its first event, ‘Valuable Organisations’, took place on 22 June in Eindhoven. With nearly 100 participants, it was a successful night. The seminar was a new experience for many attendants. The positive feedback indicated that the participants enjoyed the seminar. The Communication & Change Network of Professionals (NoP) is a network organisation that was founded in 2001 by Atos Origin employees as an organisation in which interested colleagues and peers could exchange knowledge and experience with regard to communication and change management.
