High Tech Campus Eindhoven welcomes new director
As of 1 May, Frans Schmetz (54) has been appointed Managing Director of High Tech Campus Eindhoven. He succeeds Herman de Haan who is retiring. Prior to this, Frans Schmetz was both CEO of Philips Belgium/Luxemburg and General Manager of the European Affairs Office in Brussels. All in all, Schmetz has been working for Philips for twenty-nine years and he has broad international experience in various management positions including in Hong Kong, United States and Belgium. In the course of his career he has built up an extensive international network. Under his management, High Tech Campus Eindhoven will continue to grow as a Hotspot for Human-Focused Innovation.
Frans Schmetz: "The growth of the Campus is crucial to the economic prosperity of the Netherlands. Innovation is the fuel that drives a top economy and should provide the answers to a great many social challenges now and in the future. The Campus is growing and prospering. Expectations are that the Campus will have 8,000 residents by the end of 2009. Growth as such is not a yardstick for success, but it does have a very positive effect. The sheer size gives interested companies and institutes the idea that 'this is the place where it all happens, and we want to be part of it'. The Campus, an open innovation ecosystem, is proving its worth. Together we created the meeting place for high tech business development. It is a working environment that appeals to people. I am very pleased to be able to further develop this hotspot together."

Philips Consumer Lifestyle + Philips IT move to Campus
Two Philips departments – Philips Consumer Lifestyle and Philips IT - are relocating their activities to High Tech Campus Eindhoven. This means that the Campus will have a total of around 8,000 residents by the end of 2009. Philips has decided to relocate these departments to the Campus because their activities have a clear R&D profile, and so they link up well with the activities of Campus residents. The departments also want to collaborate more with the other organisations on the Campus. The first Philips IT employees arrived in the past few weeks. The rest of the new Campus residents will move in during the next few months. The overall move will be in stages and everything will be completed by early next year. Philips Consumer Lifestyle will have its offices in building HTC 37 and Philips IT in buildings HTC 42, 43 and 45.
American interest in Brabant: AmCham visits Campus
Of all the foreign companies established in Brabant, US organisations have created by far the most jobs. With 275 offices, they account for more than 25% of foreign activities in Brabant and for nearly 40% of all direct jobs (31,000 jobs). But the North Brabant Development Agency (Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij, BOM) believes that Brabant has even more potential. The majority of American companies that set up an office in the Netherlands do so in the Randstad area.
In order to inform American companies established in the Netherlands about the high-tech industry in Brabant, BOM and The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) organised a network event in collaboration with High Tech Campus Eindhoven on 9 April. "Many US companies that currently have offices in the Randstad area were surprised by the dynamics and by the presence of major US companies in Brabant," says BOM spokesman Bodo de Wit. "With eighty interested parties this first event on Brabant soil was very successful. The many reactions showed that the attendants were positively surprised by the high-quality developments in Eindhoven and on the Campus."
"Many visitors stayed on afterwards for hours, to talk," Mr de Wit continued, "Which shows that there is a need for a network. So more events will follow. It remains to be seen whether this will be on the Campus or elsewhere in Brabant. With its beautiful location, its dynamics and its open innovation programmes, High Tech Campus Eindhoven at least fits the BOM objectives of helping businesses develop. The AmCham is also very excited and is looking into possibilities of setting up a committee for US businesses in Brabant."
E-magine will keep you informed about any further BOM and AmCham events at High Tech Campus Eindhoven.
TechBiz Seminar 23 June:
Enabling IT Business Innovation
TiasNimbas Business School recently set up a subsidiary on High Tech Campus Eindhoven. This educational institute directly embraces the concept of sharing knowledge and, together with the Campus Site Management, has organised a series of TechBiz Seminars especially developed for the high-tech community on the Campus. The first seminar was an immediate success. The 55 participants filled up the room almost completely.
The second of the four 2009 TechBiz Seminars will take place on Tuesday, 23 June from 16.00 to 18.00 hours in the Conference Center in The Strip. The subject of this interactive seminar is 'Enabling IT Business Innovation'. Guest speaker is Prof. Ramon O'Callaghan, associate professor of TiasNimbas and the University of Tilburg.

Become a member of the High Tech Campus Network of Professionals
Want to build up a network of fellow professionals in your field? Discuss high-tech developments? Share knowledge with other Campus residents? In 2001, Atos Origin employees set up the Network of Professionals (NoP). The network now has over 600 members from both within and outside the ICT company. The NoP regularly organises activities for Campus residents, often in collaboration with High Tech Campus Eindhoven: communication training sessions, elevator pitch workshops and seminars. Any topic related to personal development, communication and sustainable business is considered. Do you have a specific idea for an activity? The NoP challenges you to set up an activity (with its help)!
On 22 June, the NoP will hold a seminar in the Conference Center in The Strip on the added value of networks and information exchange for companies. Various speakers from the Atos Origin network will take the stage, as well as 'life-hacking guru' Martijn Aslander. He will share his views on the options of and obstacles to knowledge sharing between companies and where sustainability fits in. For more information on the NoP, membership and free registration for the conference on 22 June, please send an e-mail to the secretariat.

Residents HTC 83 and HTC 84 get acquainted
Friday May 15th, the residents of the brand new buildings High Tech Campus 83 and 84 (at the other site of the water alongside The Strip) organized an informal acquaintance. As neighbours they are curious to know who else works in these new buildings.
Especially for this occasion the ground floor of building number 84 was set up with some furniture. The most special furnishing was placed in the entrance hall. A clever fellow doll welcomed the participants; a very successful high tech application made by Jochem Witteman. With a luxurious view on the green Campus area the employees of Silicon Hive (HTC 83) and Vereenigde, Yacht and CTMM (all from HTC 84) enjoyed the informal party.
To be honest, we wouldn’t mind whether the ground floor of HTC 84 is still to be let after summer, so that the acquaintance might be continued in this form...
MiPlaza expands capabilities
Over the past few months, MiPlaza, the shared laboratory facilities on the Campus, has been seriously expanding its portfolio of capabilities. For instance, its range of thermal analysis technologies has been expanded and upgraded, resulting in a combination of options that will provide a solution to virtually any analysis problem in this field. For those in the know: MiPlaza now offers systems for Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermo Graphimetric Analysis, Differential Thermo Analysis, Thermo Mechanic Analysis, and Dynamic Mechanic Analysis.
In addition to these analysis methods, three Technical Notes on the MiPlaza website also mention three new capabilities. The first is Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging. This technology enables the user to determine the origin of organic contamination of particles that are difficult to determine, even with a good microscope. In collaboration with Philips Applied Technologies, MiPlaza has also added two mechanical analysis methods: Mechanical Testing and Materialography by optical microscopy. These upgrades and additions give MiPlaza a state-of-the-art range of equipment as well as the expertise to help clients solve their chemical, electronic, physical and mechanical problems. Innovation update for CEOs from the world of MEMS
Yole Développement organises meetings across the world for top decision makers from the world of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems). During the conferences executives and senior managers exchange ideas about the latest innovations, business challenges and developments in MEMS. After New York, Tokyo and Lyon, it was MiPlaza's turn to play host to the company, in collaboration with High Tech Campus Eindhoven. Over 50 participants attended a series of presentations over a period of two and a half days. In addition to presentations on High Tech Campus Eindhoven, NXP and Océ, Gerjan van de Walle presented MiPlaza. Van de Walle has a strong background in MEMS (RF, sensors, organic electronics, biochips) and gained his experience in various Philips Research programmes. At the MEMS CEO meeting, Van de Walle talked about the value of flexible and reusable MEMS technology platforms based on standard processes and design libraries – a topical theme in the current economic situation. Besides attending presentations, the company also visited the MiPlaza cleanrooms. MiPlaza and the Campus can look back on a successful meeting in an important network.
How does Venture Capital work?
Venture Capital is a container conception of risk investors. The financing of a company usually takes place in a number of 'rounds'. Each round consists of an amount of money necessary for the development of a company in a certain stage. The financing of starting companies is generally described as 'seed' or 'early stage'. This financing stage is only a fraction of the total investment. However, in the current economic recession it is the only category of financing that runs quite normally. Next to 'early stage funds' there are so called 'angel funds'. A business angel is a private investor that operates in a group while investing in technostarters. Together with large investment funds, knowledge institutes, companies and service companies (like lawyers, tax directors and other professional services) they form the Venture Capital ecosystem. How to start a technofirm? It usually commences with an groundbreaking idea for a new product or service. You develop the idea on your own - or in a small team - into a sound business plan. With this business plan you can address an early stage fund. Good ideas that fit the scope of the fund have a real chance on gaining the necessary finances.
Cees Jan Koomen
Founder, CEO, Managing Partner Point-One Innovation Fund, High Tech Campus Eindhoven.
NovaTouch

The system can be expanded with care concepts such as alarm systems and domotics.
Why an office on the Campus?
We chose the Campus because of its central location and dynamic environment. The Campus also has other new businesses with which we can exchange ideas.

Fred van Roosmalen vice-chairman of Point-One
Fred van Roosmalen has been appointed vice-chairman of Point-One effective as of 1 March. Over the past years he has been very active within the high-tech innovation programme and his appointment is therefore a logical continuation of his worthy contribution.

Smart parking helps!
The Campus manages its property with care. This is reflected in the quality of the environment, the buildings, the green spaces and the parking areas. To ensure that everybody can park as close to their work as possible, the Campus has drawn up parking regulations. These regulations link the building numbers to the car parks. You can see where you can park from the list below:
| Buildings 0-19 (including The Strip) | park in P0 |
| Buildings 20-29 | park in P2 |
| Buildings 30-39 | park in P3 |
| Buildings 40-49 | park in P4 |
| Buildings 50-59 | park in P5 |
| Buildings 60-89 | park in P6 |
Want to be assured of a parking spot nearby? Start carpooling, take your bicycle or use public transport. The number 407 bus takes a direct route between the station and High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

That day is the World Blood Donor Day, a day on which Sanquin wants to put all blood donors in the spotlight. Bike to Work: sustainable initiative
This year the worldwide Bike to Work week took place from Monday 11 to Friday 15 May. The week is an initiative of the Philips Bike to Work network. The objective of the network is to encourage people to commute by bike for health reasons and to contribute in a positive way to the climate. The Bike to Work network consists of 49 contact persons who, together, have managed to motivate 38,600 employees (!) to participate.
The Campus participates in a similar sustainable initiative "Cycling scores", a campaign to encourage the use of the bicycle in the Netherlands in an active and challenging way. Register on behalf of the Campus at www.fietsenscoort.nl, record the number of kilometres covered and qualify for a great prize. Last year, Campus resident Jeroen van Zijl of MiPlaza won a bicycle with "Cycling scores".
Cheap bus tickets to the Campus
The Province of Brabant and City Region Eindhoven (Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven, SRE) want to promote the use of public transport. That's why, since 1 January 2009, they have been offering an extensive timetable, excellent travel information, more accessible bus stops, comfortable buses and seriously reduced ticket prices. If you commute to the Campus every day, a monthly season ticket is ideal! For the price of only € 27,- a month you can use all buses in the province of North Brabant, both during peak hours and off-peak hours. Look here for all special offers and special rates.
Convenient and environmentally-friendly means of transport on the Campus
Some time ago the Campus started a pilot in which 35 bicycles were made freely available to Campus residents to use on the site. This solution, based on the original white bike initiative of the Sixties, was a success, which is why the Campus decided to expand the bicycle plan last year. The new bikes will be delivered soon. These bicycles may be used freely by every Campus resident and can be collected from all manned receptions on the Campus.
You can register with your campus badge at reception points in various buildings. After use, you can hand in the bicycle at any building on the site that has a manned reception and sign out. The bicycles are serviced by the campus bicycle repair man, Louis Stravens.
Pub Quiz in the Grand Café
We had our first Pub Quiz in the Grand Café in March. It was a major success. No fewer than thirteen teams entered the quiz. In April, this number rose to sixteen. The game is really on now! Anyone who wants to participate with colleagues or friends can go to the Grand Café every first Monday of the month. The Pub Quiz is a lively quiz show with topical questions on music, sports, current affairs, recognising sounds and so on. Send an e-mail to dishcovery.thestrip@philips.com to register your team (2 to 4 persons). The participation fee is €5 per team. Prior to the Pub Quiz you can have a delicious meal in the Grand Café. The dish of the day costs only €7 per person.
The Pub Quiz is scheduled for every first Monday of the month, from 18.00 to 20.30 hours (with the exception of June, when it is held on the 2nd Monday due to the Whitsun bank holiday, and August when there is no Pub Quiz). The winning team will receive a great prize. The team that has gathered the most points overall at the end of the year will win the Grand Prize. So... register with your team and test your knowledge!
