De Nederlandse Kampioenschappen schaken vinden dit jaar plaats in Eindhoven. Van 10 tot en met 20 juni 2010 zal er op High Tech Campus Eindhoven gestreden worden om de nationale schaaktitels van Nederland.

Bestuurslid Topschaak van de KNSB, Jan Stomphorst, legt uit waarom juist deze locatie zo geschikt is voor het topschaakevenement van de schaakbond: ‘De gemeente Eindhoven profileert zich nadrukkelijk als Brainport Eindhoven – een uniek samenwerkingsverband tussen bedrijfsleven, kennisinstellingen en overheid. High Tech Campus Eindhoven is een vierkante kilometer pure denkkracht, gericht op innovatie. Schakers zijn bij uitstek strategen; denkers met een meer dan gemiddelde belangstelling voor technische studies. Schaken is een sport die dankzij innovatie een stormachtige ontwikkeling doormaakt. De samenwerking tussen de gemeente Eindhoven, de Campus en de KNSB is dan ook heel logisch.’

‘De Campus is een plek waar uitzonderlijke geesten zich thuis voelen’, aldus Frans Schmetz, Managing Director van de Campus. ‘Topschakers en medewerkers van de Campus-bedrijven spreken dezelfde taal en delen dezelfde passie voor het oplossen van complexe problemen. Een perfecte ‘match’ wat mij betreft.’

De laatste keer dat het NK schaken in Eindhoven werd georganiseerd was 1993 toen het PSV-stadion de schakers gastvrij ontving. High Tech Campus Eindhoven biedt de KNSB echter mogelijkheden die bij uitstek passen bij een sport waarin het live volgen van wedstrijden via internet gemeengoed is. Daarnaast is Eindhoven als evenementen- én als sportstad bij uitstek geschikt voor het organiseren van dit soort activiteiten. Bezoekers van evenementen merken hier snel dat Brabantse gezelligheid en een strakke organisatie heel goed samengaan. Zowel de schaakbond als de gemeente Eindhoven hebben aangegeven uit te zien naar een duurzame samenwerking. De KNSB, bezig met een succesvolle campagne Internetschaak, zal naast topschaak ook een scala aan breedtesportactiviteiten ontplooien om het schaken in de volle breedte te stimuleren.

Het deelnemersveld zal de komende maand bekend worden. Alle partijen van de Nederlandse Kampioenschappen zullen live te volgen zijn via www.schaakbond.nl.

This year's Dutch Chess Championships are to be held in Eindhoven. From 10 to 20 June 2010 inclusive chess players will compete for the Netherlands' national chess titles at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

Jan Stomphorst, director in charge of top-level chess at the KNSB (Royal Dutch Chess Association), explains why this particular location is so perfect for the chess association's top-level chess event: ‘The Eindhoven municipality promotes itself as Brainport Eindhoven – a unique form of cooperation between industry, knowledge institutes and the government. The High Tech Campus Eindhoven represents a square kilometer of pure brain power focused on innovation. Chess players are exceptional strategists, thinkers with a higher than average level of interest in technical studies. Chess is a sport which, thanks to innovation, has undergone a rapid development. The cooperation between the Eindhoven municipality, the Campus and the KNSB is therefore quite natural.’

‘The Campus is somewhere where exceptional minds feel at home,’ says Frans Schmetz, Managing Director of the Campus. ‘Top-level chess players and the employees of the businesses located on the Campus speak the same language and share the same passion for solving complex problems. If you ask me, it's a perfect match.’

The last time the National Chess Championships were held in Eindhoven was in 1993 when the PSV stadium opened its doors to the chess players. The High Tech Campus Eindhoven, however, is able to offer the KNSB facilities that are ideally suited for a sport in which people expect to be able to follow the matches live on the Internet. Furthermore, as a city used to organizing major events and large sporting competitions, the city of Eindhoven is the ideal place to organize an activity of this kind. Visitors to events in Eindhoven quickly notice how well the warm welcome from the people of Brabant and the efficient organization go together. Both the chess association and the Eindhoven municipality have made it clear that they look forward to a long-term relationship. The KNSB is currently engaged in a successful Internet chess campaign and plans to develop not only top-level chess but also a range of more accessible sports activities to help promote chess right across the board.
