Imagine… being where tomorrow’s technologies take shape
High Tech Campus Eindhoven is synonymous with open innovation. In an area of just one square kilometre, more than 7,000 researchers, developers and entrepreneurs work closely together developing the technologies and products of tomorrow. Intelligent pills that monitor our health wherever we are, smart shop windows that display offers for the products we are viewing at a particular moment, extremely energy-efficient lighting concepts in walls and ceilings. The technological opportunities are overwhelming and will be explored. Campus companies share the drive to create value for people and to develop innovative solutions that make human life healthier, more pleasant, easier and more interesting. High Tech Campus Eindhoven is the Hotspot for Human Focused Innovation.
The driving force behind the establishment of High Tech Campus Eindhoven was Philips. At the end of the 1990s, the R&D activities of the company were spread right across Eindhoven. In 1998, to remedy this, Philips established the High Tech Campus to act as a single location for all its national R&D activities. This approach proved highly successful. The atmosphere of openness and the concentration of high-end knowledge and facilities produced considerable interaction between the researchers. Knowledge sharing and mutual inspiration generated a definite boost for the innovative capacity of the organisation. To further accelerate this process, Philips decided in 2003 to open up the Campus to other technological companies. The result was massive growth with numerous innovative companies – both large and small – keen to become part of this R&D hotspot.
In 2009, High Tech Campus Eindhoven has developed into a dynamic mix of more than 90 organisations, from global companies and innovative SME businesses via research institutes right through to techno start-ups. On this location, technical talent from all corners of the globe translate research into successful products for the world market. And the power behind all this success is: partnership.
Open innovation is the preferred work approach on the Campus. With a huge number of technical specialists just a stone’s throw away, Campus companies are able to focus on their core competences. Campus companies inspire one another by sharing knowledge and experience. As a result, innovations are achieved more rapidly and are of better quality. At High Tech Campus Eindhoven, partnerships are further boosted by the open research programmes of technology institutes such as Holst Centre, Center for Translational Molecular Medicine and Océ Inkjet Application Centre. Within these programmes, a range of different partners cooperate according to their own specific strengths in research for new technologies. In due course, the individual partners use the research results to implement their own applications.
A typical characteristic of the Campus is the sharing of facilities. MiPlaza forms the backbone of this technical infrastructure. This organisation offers cleanrooms, a whole raft of test laboratories, high-tech research equipment and technical expertise. As well as MiPlaza, there are laboratories for media research, user testing and electromagnetic compatibility, as well as specialist training centres, a high level ICT network and central purchasing facilities for industrial gases and chemicals. Campus companies can make use of this technical infrastructure without individually having to make the related costly investments. They simply buy in whatever they need. This process is cheaper and means that even recently started and relatively small R&D companies can have access to state-of-the-art facilities.
High Tech Campus Eindhoven is an ideal workplace, and an international community of highly trained specialists; people who speak the same language and share the same passion for technology. They come together to brainstorm on technical challenges, innovative concepts and business opportunities. The entire structure of the Campus is aimed at facilitating this process as well as possible.
The beating heart of the Campus is The Strip. All social facilities are brought together in this 400-metre-long building. The Strip houses three restaurants, two bars, a conference centre with auditorium, a range of shops and services, and the Campus Wellness Center. Residents and visitors to the Campus meet at The Strip every day, for lunch, an intensive workout or during one of the many network meetings, concerts or technical conferences. The Strip is the centre for meetings, inspiration and creativity.
The Campus site has an open, green and park-like character. With some 15 kilometres of paths to walk along, there is plenty of space for relaxation in hectic work schedules. A vital element of the philosophy of ‘relaxation through exertion’ is Campus Sports, where visitors can choose from 24 different sports sections and make use of a wide range of outdoor and indoor facilities.
The use of natural materials, transparent facades, semi open-plan workstation concepts and large numbers of meeting places means that the architecture of the Campus also supports the open innovation philosophy.
It goes without saying that technology development is the foundation stone of High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The companies and people at the Campus represent an ever growing accumulation of knowledge in various fields of technology including High Tech Systems, Microsystems, Embedded Systems, Life Sciences and Infotainment. Working within these domains, they create technical products in such fields as Health and Experience. Beds that monitor our health, smart medicines that only deliver the active agent where it is needed, packaging that displays in real time how fresh the meat is, gaming computers that create an optimum gaming experience using light, sound, pictures, vibrations and smells. Thanks to innovations like these, High Tech Campus Eindhoven stands out as a powerful R&D cluster where research activities lead to new business creation.
The Campus focuses attention on start-up technical companies. These innovative, young businesses have the potential to become successful global players. The Bèta building has been specially designated for these companies. This multi-tenant building serves as a Business & Technology Accelerator where start-ups inspire and encourage one another. Within the Campus, techno starters will find a technical infrastructure and ecosystem of possible partners and investors, and a location with a truly appealing image.
High Tech Campus Eindhoven is at the heart of Europe’s leading R&D region. The Eindhoven, Louvain, Aachen triangle (ELAt) is an area that has acquired a strong European position in micro-electronics/nano-electronics and life sciences. To the north, the R&D region maintains relationships with the university of technology cities of Delft and Enschede, where the focus is on fundamental scientific research. High Tech Campus Eindhoven is also the heart of Brainport Eindhoven, the area famous for its high concentration of high-tech and knowledge-intensive industry, and has access to Eindhoven’s renowned University of Technology and University of Applied Sciences. Alongside these centres of knowledge, leading European centres such as Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Paris, Munich and Düsseldorf can be quickly and easily reached from the Campus.
Opening an office or laboratory at High Tech Campus Eindhoven offers one further major advantage: it acts as a magnet for technical talent. All over the globe, technical specialists are aware of the technological challenges on offer in Eindhoven. The proximity to a number of universities of technology and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Germany also ensures a constant supply of technical personnel. And the high concentration of knowledge-intensive companies in Brainport guarantees that this technical talent stays in the region.
Together, the companies and institutes at High Tech Campus Eindhoven make a real difference. They probe the boundaries of technology with a view to improving our quality of life. High Tech Campus Eindhoven is the Hotspot for Human Focused Innovation.
