High Tech Campus Eindhoven: sustainability as a business philosophy

The green, park-like character of the site makes High Tech Campus Eindhoven a pleasant working environment. This character also reflects the Campus’ focus on sustainable and environmentally-friendly business practice. Since its establishment, High Tech Campus Eindhoven has been cooperating with environmental organisations, national authorities and other dedicated organisations to encourage sustainable and responsible behaviour. The Campus has invested more than 50 million euro in a series of measures, focusing on sustainability, insulation, development of natural surroundings, use of friendly materials, water management, separated sour systems, energy saving and CO2 reduction.

Energy-efficient buildings

All new buildings have an energy-efficient design, for example they all feature self-adjusting sun blinds to save energy on cooling requirements. Large glass facades guarantee high levels of daylight, keeping energy consumption for lighting to a minimum. The largest car park area is equipped with photo voltaic cells that deliver electricity to the Campus power network.

Innovative

One innovative, energy-saving solution is the cold and heat storage system in use on the Campus. Two water reservoirs are located underground, in the well-insulated sand-bearing layers. One is used for the storage of cold water and the other for hot water. During the summer, the cold water is pumped up to cool the buildings. The water is thus heated, before being stored in the hot water reservoir. This water is then used in the winter to heat the buildings. The system produces an energy saving in excess of 30%.

CO2 reduction

High Tech Campus Eindhoven encourages the reduction of CO2 emissions by Campus residents. The Campus for example encourages the use of bicycles in the form of a financial arrangement, and has provided facilities for car pooling and the use of public transport. The Campus is connected to the local bus network with a high-speed link to Eindhoven station. By discouraging the use of cars in the central site, and offering 100 Campus bikes for general use, the Campus encourages its residents to move around the site on foot or by bicycle. The cold and heat storage system is used for 60% of the Campus buildings. It delivers warmth and cooling without CO2 emissions.

Sponsoring

Because a pleasant living environment for humans and animals is also an issue for the future, High Tech Campus Eindhoven sponsors the nearby Environmental Education Centre in Eindhoven. At this centre, schoolchildren are taught about nature in their immediate surroundings, via a series of exhibitions. The Campus is also a participant in Countdown 2010, a European environmental programme working on the retention of biodiversity. Alongside these initiatives of the Campus Site Management, many of the Campus companies are working towards producing energy-efficient and environmentally-responsible products and production methods.
